オランダのディラン・イェシルギョズ＝ゼヘリウス副首相兼国防大臣と小泉防衛大臣による防衛大臣会合において、日英通訳を担当させていただきました。
安全保障・防衛協力をテーマとしたハイレベル会合でしたが、オランダと日本は長い友好の歴史があることもあり、終始温かい雰囲気の中で会談が進められました。
会談の中盤以降は、小泉大臣が直接英語で意見交換をされる場面も多く見られました。国際会議の場でも自然かつ的確に英語でコミュニケーションを取られる姿が印象的でした。
その一方で、通訳を介する場面では温かいお声がけをいただくこともありました。ご自身が英語を使われるからこそ、通訳の役割や難しさにも理解を示してくださり、大変ありがたく感じました。
今回も両国の対話を支える一助となれたことを光栄に思うとともに、通訳という仕事の責任とやりがいを改めて感じる機会となりました。
I had the honor of serving as the English-Japanese interpreter during the meeting between Dutch Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius and Japan’s Minister of Defense, Shinjiro Koizumi.
The high-level meeting focused on security and defense cooperation. Reflecting the long-standing friendship between the Netherlands and Japan, the discussions took place in a warm and constructive atmosphere throughout.
From the middle of the meeting onward, Minister Koizumi frequently engaged in direct exchanges in English. I was impressed by how naturally and effectively he communicated in an international setting.
At the same time, whenever interpretation was required, he took the time to offer words of encouragement and support. As someone who regularly communicates in English himself, he clearly understands both the importance and the challenges of interpretation, which I greatly appreciated.
It was a privilege to play a small role in facilitating dialogue between the two countries.
